IPL Hair Removal: What Is It?

IPL hair removal is an advanced cosmetic treatment that removes body hair in a virtually pain-free manner. The non-laser high-intensity light aka Intense Pulsed Light, heats up and destroys hair follicles to prevent more hair growth.

How Does IPL Hair Removal Work

IPL hair removal requires a special handheld medical-spa device. Many beauty and personal grooming brands have engineered such devices for the Medical Spa industry.

However, the treatment is offered by our medical spa right here in Kingsville and licensed dermatologists, which are entirely hassle-free options.

How Does IPL Hair Removal Work?

To perform this treatment, a handheld device emits a broad spectrum of light. The light energy is absorbed by the hair, where it builds up heat to damage and destroy the follicles.

The base of the follicles, i.e., the hair root, is also killed. It removes body hair and gives permanent hair reduction.

The workings of this method are similar to laser hair removal. Technically, these two light treatments differ because IPL uses a single wavelength of light for this sole purpose of permanent hair reduction.

However, laser treatments need to use multiple wavelengths of laser light to accomplish the same task.

Does IPL Hair Removal Work on All Hair and Skin Types?

IPL hair removal can effectively remove hair from your face, arms, underarms, legs, chest, stomach, and bikini area. However, it is not well suited for all types of skin and hair colors.

It is not ideal for pale blonde, red, or gray hair. But it works well on all shades of black, brown, and dark blonde hair.

As for the skin, it is not recommended for extremely dark skin tones. Discoloration is a common effect in darker skin tones. But if you have a light skin tone, you have nothing to worry about.

Is IPL Hair Removal Painful?

IPL hair removal is reportedly pain-free… but it does depend on your pain threshold. Most patients compare it to the flick of a rubber band.

IPL devices today work so quickly, you’ll barely have time to register any of these sensations. So, you don’t have to worry about prolonged exposure to any slight pain, especially in the hands of an expert who won’t apply the light pulses repeatedly on the same area.

You may experience a warm sensation, though.

How Many IPL Hair Removal Sessions Are Required?

You may need 4-8 IPL hair removal sessions, each lasting about 20-60 minutes. The number of sessions required depends on your hair growth cycle, which is different for everyone. The hair growth cycle has the following stages –

  1. Anagen – Active growth stage where the hair is visible on the skin surface
  2. Catagen – The stage of transitioning into the dormant or resting phase
  3. Telogen – Dormant stage where the hair rests above the base and a new hair forms in the follicle.
  4. Exogen – The stage of old hair falling out to make space for the new hair to reach the surface

You will find different hair strands across various stages of this cycle. While some are ready to fall out, others are in their prime. IPL hair removal targets hair in the anagen stage.

After the first treatment session, you must wait a few weeks. During this time, hair strands already in the exogen stage will reach the anagen stage – and they can be removed.

Any Side Effects of IPL Sessions?

You may experience some common side effects after each IPL session. These might include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Stinging sensation

But these are temporary side effects, most of which last for 4-8 hours. The swelling may last for a few days.

Pre- and Post-Procedure Care for IPL Hair Reduction

Your dermatologist will furnish all the steps to prepare for the treatment and take care of the treated area. Generally, patients have to refrain from prolonged sun exposure.

You should also avoid tanning beds, chemical peels, waxing, or collagen injections for 2 weeks. Immediately before a session, you should also not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.

After the treatment session, you can use ice packs to soothe any discomfort. Don’t forget to apply the medicines or lotions prescribed by your dermatologist. And avoid using makeup, skincare products, and sun exposure for a few days.
